A HENDERSONVILLE LANDMARK—1235 5th Ave. W

The first owner of this beautiful property that I am aware of was Birdie West.  She was a well known and very popular ladies apparel merchant.  She specialized in hats because ladies during her time were "Big into hats"—of all kinds and for all customers.  Birdie moved her dress shop from Downtown to her home.

It was a very popular place with all of the town's upscale ladies.

1235 5th Avenue, West is at the corner of 5th Ave. and Blythe St.
This old postcard was probably made in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

This photo was made from almost the same location on May 2, 2014.
Later, a former wife of Jim Hudson, friend and Captain of our high school football team,
bought the house and turned it in to a Bed and Breakfast that was reasonably well used until she sold it because of poor health.

The next owners were investment brokers.  They built a very expensive wrought iron fence around all of the property. They had big dogs and planted thick hedges to shield the property. Soon, it has been told to me that the owner ran into trouble for taking advantage of widowed customers, were sued and later went to jail.

The last sale of the property was, I'm told, to a dentist and his son.  From the outside observing, they have done an outstanding job of rehabbing the home, a free-standing dwelling and the property in general.  It is now for sale at what has been estimated at near $1 Million.

I'M ALWAYS GLAD TO RECEIVE OLD PHOTOS TOGETHER WITH BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THEM. THEY WILL BE USED ON MY BLOG WITH FULL CREDIT TO OWNERS.
